SEO Process — Step 01

Technical SEO Audit

Before you optimize a single title tag or publish a single piece of content, you need to know whether Google can actually crawl, index, and understand your site. Most Los Angeles businesses are losing organic rankings to technical problems they do not know exist.

Why technical SEO comes first

The Foundation Everything Else Depends On

Content strategy, link building, and on-page optimization are all wasted effort if Google cannot efficiently crawl and index your site. Technical SEO is the foundation — and for most Los Angeles businesses, it is where the biggest ranking gains are hiding.

A technical SEO audit is not a checklist of best practices. It is a forensic investigation of how search engine crawlers experience your site — what they can access, what they cannot, what signals they receive about page quality and relevance, and what technical barriers are preventing your best content from ranking where it should.

We use a combination of automated crawl tools, Google Search Console data, and manual QA to build a complete picture of your site's technical health — then prioritize fixes by estimated ranking impact, not by how easy they are to implement.

How Core Web Vitals Failures Translate to Lost Rankings and Revenue

Google's Page Experience ranking signal uses Core Web Vitals as its primary input. Pages that fail these thresholds receive a ranking penalty that compounds over time — and for competitive Los Angeles markets, even a small ranking drop translates to significant traffic and revenue loss.

LCP (Largest Contentful Paint)≤ 2.5s2.5–4.0s> 4.0sHigh — primary load signal
CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift)≤ 0.10.1–0.25> 0.25Medium — UX signal
INP (Interaction to Next Paint)≤ 200ms200–500ms> 500msHigh — replaced FID in 2024
TTFB (Time to First Byte)≤ 800ms800ms–1.8s> 1.8sMedium — server response

LCP: The Most Impactful Core Web Vital for Los Angeles Service Businesses

Largest Contentful Paint measures how long it takes for the largest visible element on the page to load — typically a hero image, a large heading, or a video thumbnail. For most Los Angeles service business websites, the LCP element is an unoptimized hero image: a 2–4MB JPEG that was uploaded directly from a camera without compression or format conversion.

The fix is almost always the same: convert the image to WebP or AVIF format (reducing file size by 40–80% with no visible quality loss), add explicit width and height attributes to prevent layout shift, and implement lazy loading for below-fold images while using eager loading for the LCP element. These three changes alone typically move LCP from "Poor" to "Good" for image-heavy pages.

For pages where the LCP element is a server-rendered heading or text block, the bottleneck is usually server response time (TTFB). We audit your hosting infrastructure, caching configuration, and database query performance to identify and eliminate server-side latency.

Crawl Budget and Indexation: Why Google May Not Be Seeing Your Best Pages

Crawl budget is the number of pages Googlebot will crawl on your site within a given time period. For small sites (under 1,000 pages), crawl budget is rarely a constraint. For larger sites — e-commerce stores, multi-location service businesses, news sites — crawl budget management is critical. If Googlebot is wasting crawl budget on low-value pages (paginated archives, filtered URL variants, duplicate content), your most important pages may not be crawled frequently enough to rank competitively.

Our technical audit includes a full crawl budget analysis: we identify pages that are consuming crawl budget without contributing to rankings, and implement the appropriate signals (noindex, canonical, disallow in robots.txt) to redirect Googlebot's attention toward your highest-value content.

Common crawl budget wasters

  • Paginated archive pages with thin content
  • Faceted navigation creating thousands of URL variants
  • Session IDs and tracking parameters in URLs
  • Duplicate content across www / non-www / HTTP / HTTPS
  • Soft 404 pages returning 200 status codes
  • Infinite scroll pages without proper pagination signals

Structured Data: The Ranking Signal Most LA Businesses Are Leaving on the Table

Schema markup — structured data in JSON-LD format — tells Google exactly what your page is about, who your business is, and what type of content it contains. Correctly implemented schema can unlock rich results in Google Search: star ratings, FAQ dropdowns, event listings, product prices, and local business information that appear directly in the SERP before a user even clicks.

For Los Angeles service businesses, the highest-impact schema types are LocalBusiness (with address, phone, hours, and service area), Service (with description and provider), FAQPage (which can generate FAQ rich results that double your SERP real estate), and Review (which displays star ratings in organic results). Each of these schema types has specific implementation requirements that most websites get wrong.

Our technical audit validates every schema implementation on your site against Google's Rich Results Test and Schema.org specifications, identifies missing schema opportunities, and provides implementation-ready JSON-LD code for each fix.

What You Get: A Prioritized Technical Remediation Roadmap

A technical SEO audit is only valuable if it produces actionable output. Our audit deliverable is not a 200-page report of every issue Screaming Frog found — it is a prioritized remediation roadmap that tells your development team exactly what to fix, in what order, and why.

Every issue in our roadmap is scored by estimated ranking impact (High / Medium / Low) and implementation complexity (Easy / Medium / Hard). We prioritize High-impact, Easy-to-implement fixes first — the changes that will move rankings fastest with the least development effort. Complex infrastructure changes (server-side rendering, CDN configuration, database optimization) are scoped separately with realistic timelines.

Audit deliverables

  • Full site crawl report with issue categorization
  • Core Web Vitals field data and lab data analysis
  • Indexation and crawl budget assessment
  • Structured data validation and gap analysis
  • Prioritized remediation roadmap (High/Medium/Low)
  • Implementation-ready code snippets for quick wins
  • 30-minute walkthrough call with your development team
