SEO Process — Step 02
Keyword & Content Gap Analysis
Ranking for the wrong keywords is as expensive as not ranking at all. We map your current organic footprint against your target keyword universe and identify the gaps with the highest revenue potential — validated by your own paid search conversion data.
Conversion-first keyword strategy
Why Most Keyword Research Gets It Backwards
Standard keyword research starts with search volume and works backward to relevance. We start with conversion data and work forward to search volume. The keywords worth pursuing organically are the ones that already convert in paid search — not the ones with the highest monthly search volume in a keyword tool.
For Los Angeles businesses, this distinction is especially important. A personal injury attorney ranking for 'car accident lawyer Los Angeles' (2,400 searches/month, $180 CPC) is worth far more than ranking for 'what to do after a car accident' (8,100 searches/month, $1.20 CPC). The first query has transactional intent. The second has informational intent. Only one of them drives revenue.
Our keyword and content gap analysis identifies the specific queries where your target customers are in buying mode — and maps the content investments required to capture those rankings.

How We Identify the Content Gaps Worth Closing
A content gap is a keyword where your target customers are searching, your competitors are ranking, and you are not. Not all content gaps are worth closing — only the ones where the keyword has transactional or commercial intent, your competitors' content is beatable, and the ranking is achievable within a reasonable timeframe given your domain authority.
Content gap prioritization matrix — example output
| Keyword | Monthly searches | Your position | Top competitor | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PPC management Los Angeles | 480 | Not ranking | #1 | High |
| Google Ads agency LA | 320 | #14 | #1 | High |
| paid search consultant Los Angeles | 210 | #8 | #1 | Medium |
| Facebook ads agency Los Angeles | 390 | Not ranking | #2 | High |
| conversion rate optimization LA | 170 | #22 | #3 | Medium |
| what is PPC advertising | 8,100 | Not ranking | #1 | Low |
Illustrative example. Priority is determined by intent (transactional > commercial > informational), competition difficulty, and domain authority gap. Note: 'what is PPC advertising' has 17x more searches but is Low priority because it has informational intent and will not convert.
The PPC-to-SEO Intelligence Transfer: Our Unfair Advantage
Most SEO agencies do keyword research using the same tools available to everyone: Ahrefs, SEMrush, Google Keyword Planner. These tools show search volume and competition data, but they cannot tell you which keywords actually convert to customers — because they do not have access to your conversion data.
We do. Because we manage paid search campaigns for our SEO clients, we have 12–24 months of conversion data showing exactly which keywords drive form submissions, phone calls, and closed deals — and at what cost per acquisition. This data is the most valuable input in keyword strategy, and it is completely invisible to agencies that only do SEO.
When we identify a keyword that converts at a $45 CPA in paid search, we know it is worth investing in organic content for that term — because the organic equivalent CPC (program cost divided by organic clicks) will be a fraction of $45. When a keyword has high search volume but a $280 CPA in paid search, we know not to invest in organic content for it, regardless of what the keyword tools say.
Content Gap Analysis: What We Deliver and How We Use It
Our content gap analysis deliverable is a prioritized content roadmap: a list of the 20–50 highest-value keyword opportunities, ranked by revenue potential, with a content brief for each one. Each brief specifies the target keyword, the search intent, the recommended content format (service page, blog post, comparison page, FAQ), the word count and depth required to outrank the current top-ranking content, and the internal linking strategy.
We also identify quick-win opportunities: pages that are already ranking on page two (positions 11–20) for high-value keywords. These pages are close to page one and often require only targeted on-page optimization — not new content creation — to break through. For most Los Angeles businesses, there are 5–15 of these quick-win opportunities hiding in their existing content.
